MANAGEMENT LEARNING’S FROM DABBAWALA

AND THE VISION AHEAD

During the session of ‘Mumbai Dabbawala’ at NL Dalmia Institute of Management & Research on 1st August 2024 was very informative, inspiring and motivational. We got to know how the whole Mumbai Dabbawala’s system works in just three hours that to at the rush period (as someone from the Mumbai would say) and that to covering the whole of Mumbai in an environmentally safe (by using cycles and local train- a public transport).  Mumbai Dabbawala taught us that even if you don’t have a big and fancy degree, if you have the determination and dedication, you can do anything and achieve everything in the world.

The way the system of Dabbawala’s work is so efficient with minimum to none flaws. Although, there may be something they can do to improve the current services that they provide such as the tracking system of the dabbas (Tiffin) so that the customer will get to know the real time updates of the dabbas. The dabbawalas can even partner with local businesses or startups related to food providing services ( e.g. cloud kitchen) for cross-promotion and increased visibility. In the 21st century, everyone is available on one or the other social media platform; they can also expand their social media presence to attract wider audience. They can even consider expanding into new areas such as grocery or medicine delivery, leveraging the existing distribution network ( for example- I am currently staying in Mira Road due to college and my home is in Kalyan, to there may happen that I want to get something such as documents from my home for which I may not have time to go and get it by travelling 5 hours to & fro, so what I can do is contact the dabbawalas so that they will pick the documents from my home and deliver. These kinds of services are also offered by zomato but they are very expensive and they don’t generally do long distance delivery). They can utilize data analytics to understand customer preferences, optimize delivery routes, and improve service efficiency. They can offer experience packages i.e. offer cultural tours and experiences showcasing the dabbawala system to tourists and students interested in learning about this unique service. They can conduct regular audits of the delivery process to identify areas for improvement and ensure quality standards are maintained.

Although from the past reference and data, we have gathered that there have been 100% customer satisfaction, therefore the business can go on the same pace in short term. But if they want to stay in the business in the long term and grow more, they will have to do their SWOT ANALYSIS and make some changes accordingly.
