Stringent compliances enforced by the government ensures that the Dabbawala Welfare Council operates in an honest and transparent manner. Dabbawala Welfare Council works towards the social welfare of Dabbawala community in order to improve their quality of life. It proposes to undertake large-scape welfare projects such as housing to improve better facilities for Dabbawalas. It helps and supports Dabbawalas as per their specific need and situation.

Dabbawala system started in year 1890 when Shri Mahadeo Havaji Bachche, the inspirational and motivated founder of the Mumbai Dabbawala started the Dabbawala services with a small group of about 40 Dabbawalas to deliver healthy, home-cooked food to the office workers of Mumbai. Today, around 5000 dedicated and disciplined Dabbawalas in their trade mark white cap deliver about 200,000 Dabbas (tiffin boxes) filled with home-made food to the people of Mumbai. The historic visits of international celebrities such as Prince Charles of England (now King Charles III), Sir Richard Branson and Queen Máxima of the Netherlands have given Dabbawala international name and fame. Through the consistent hard work, Dabbawala has become an icon of time management, supply chain excellence, and epitome of sustainable organization.
