Introduction:

If you are Mumbaikar, you must have seen men wearing white clothes carrying lunch boxes in their hands, travelling on cycles, or in local trains from one place to another. These are the popular Dabbawalas of the fast-growing and forever-moving city of Mumbai.

The city of dream is home to more than 20 lakh people. A majority of them are working. Due to their urban lifestyle and demanding jobs, it becomes difficult to cook meals. Mumbai’s Dabbawala solves this problem.

‘Dabba’ means “lunchbox”, and ‘wala’ refers to “a person carrying it” therefore, Dabbawala refers to people carrying lunch boxes. It is a tiffin delivering system that delivers tiffins throughout Mumbai. It offers more than 2 lakh tiffins daily in more than 200 cities. It has more than 1000 clients, including popular companies like Deloitte, KPMG, Mahindra, Ola, Philips, Aditya Birla Group, and others.

Process: Simplicity, Flexibility and Rigor

The dabbawalas emphasize simplicity in their processes, using a basic symbol-based coding system on lunchboxes to manage deliveries. In the literal centre of this bustling whirl of human activity, there lies one of the most astonishing logistical systems in the world: the dabbawala service. For over a century, dabbawalas in Mumbai have delivered home-cooked lunch to working individuals with a surprising level of accuracy and on-time delivery. Management Learning’s from Dabbawalas

Founded in 1890, Mumbai Dabbawalas are the men dressed in traditional white outfits with Gandhi caps delivering home-cooked food to Mumbaikar from home to office daily. They are a strong army of nearly 5,000 people who ensure that 2,00,000 people get their lunch on time at their offices. Moreover, these men in white have given lectures at different business schools. Therefore, they are six sigma compatible. With so many people belonging to different communities reaching the city of dreams and no fast-food culture being that popular back then, there was a shortage of an adequate food delivery system. While there was a rising demand, there was a supply of illiterate workers who had travelled to the city after their agriculture business failed to ensure sustenance at home. With no education to work as clerks in the homes of Britishers but with enough energy to embark on any hard work, the idea of delivering home-cooked food was born. Thus was the launch of the “Dabba Delivery System” in Mumbai.

How did the Mumbai Dabbawala Emerge?

  • Nearly 125 years ago, a Parsi banker working in Fort Branch wanted to have home-cooked food in his office. So, he appointed a young man who belonged from Gurgaon to get his lunch from his home every afternoon. It is how the job of 1st Dabbawala emerged. The Mumbai dabbawala price was nearly two annas at that time. Soon, the business started picking up and gaining popularity because of the visionary work of Mahadeo Havaji Bacche, who considered this a golden opportunity and decided to grow it as a business. The dabbawalas have a fantastic service record. Each day they deliver more than 1,30,000 lunchboxes all over Mumbai. It means nearly 2,60,000 transactions being done in almost 6 hours every day, six days a week, and 52 weeks a year, without a single mistake. Surprisingly, the dabbawalas have achieved that level of performance at a low cost, eco-friendly manner, without using any digital or IT platform or even mobile phones. A study conducted by the Harvard Business School rated it “Six Sigma,” which means that the dabbawalas made less than 3.4 errors per million transactions. The way the Mumbai tiffin wala works is an inspiration for all the organizations that want to grow. Companies that cannot afford to appoint stars depend on ordinary people for support. The success of dabbawalas proves that with the right system and hardworking workers, we can achieve extraordinary results in no time. The Dabbawalas run their food delivery service on four fundamental pillars. These are the organization, management process, and culture. All these four pillars are correctly aligned and mutually supporting. It is uncommon to see such coordination in the corporate world. The Mumbai Suburban Railway, one of the most complex, vast, and mainly used urban commuter lines worldwide, plays a vital role in the Dabbawalas’ operations. Its basic layout requires delivery people with cycles and handcarts to travel between the railway stations and customers’ offices and homes. Every day, a Dabba reaches its destination after passing through several hands. In the morning, a dabbawalla picks it up from the customer’s home and goes to the nearest railway station. Then, it is sorted and put on a wooden carte as per its destination. Once it reaches the nearest station, it is sorted and assigned to another dabbawalla, who delivers it to the office before lunchtime. Once lunchtime is over, the process runs the other way around, and the Dabba reaches the customer’s home. They use a trick to avoid confusion about which Dabba (the Indian Lunchbox) belongs to. They follow a “coding system.” The lids of the dabbas are labelled with numbers, letters, and symbols indicating where they came and where they should be delivered. The Mumbai Dabbawalas are famous for their punctuality. Their mission statement since the day they started operation has been “Always deliver on time.” The Dabbawalas manage themselves concerning logistics, hiring, retention, and customer acquisition. First, however, governing committees fix guidelines for costs, considering factors like the distance between a customer’s house and office and the distance between the office and the nearest railway station. It helps them operate the service efficiently and keep charges low and the quality high. Every Dabbawala is an entrepreneur responsible for negotiating prices with his clients. As Dabbawalas own their relationships with clients and tend to work in a similar location for several years, those relationships are usually trustworthy and long-term.

Teamwork, honesty, and discipline, ownership, time management, low- cost, customer satisfaction are the hardcore strengths of the Dabbawalas. However, one of the major constraints is that it heavily relies on the local trains for their deliveries. However, the world of Dabbawalas is challenging, showing the spirit and grit of Mumbai, a city with millions of people from different parts of the world. Many dabbawalas have had to overcome challenges like floods and railway strikes. Also, they have had to advance their skills in recent times, like learning to speak English and embracing technology. In October 2020, an official website for the dabbawalas, digitaldabbawala.com, was launched. It is an official website that includes details of all the delivery organizations. In November 2020, they launched a Dabbawala app to make food delivery accessible and uncomplicated. The app helps you find food and order food from where you are. Soon, the deliverymen started growing their services from delivering lunchboxes to delivery of digital services like electronic registration of marriages and property. The idea behind these new creativities is to think outside the box and to expand the Mumbai Dabbawalas business, starting from lunch delivery to a wide range of other services.

Ideas:

The Mumbai Dabbawalas can have a tie up with several other caterers in order to serve wide variety of food. They can think of going beyond India’s Financial Capital: “Mumbai” and get widespread in several other metropolitan cities like Bengaluru, Pune, Indore, Chennai etc. This will lead in generation of more revenue as a whole along with earning the fame which will help them to prosper more as a unit. For further upgradation in the supply chain, the Dabbawalas can have a separate colour uniform for the central side tiffin supply and another colour for the western and harbour line respectively. This will help to reduce chaos and confusion among the dabbawalas to some extent and they will get the clarity regarding their delivery. They should get awarded for their quick and top-notch services which they render to their customers like they should get bonus, incentive, award for excellence etc to keep their morales high. This can imbibe confidence in them and they can retain them by creating sense of belonging and togetherness among them.

The grit and determination of the Mumbai Dabbawalas are resilient and praiseworthy. Indeed, their belief of working in philosophy of ‘Anna Daan Maha Daan’ which means donating food is the best charity and it is clearly justified by their dedication and commitment towards their work under any circumstances.

During the session of ‘Mumbai Dabbawala’ at NL Dalmia Institute of Management & Research on 1st August 2024 was very informative, inspiring and motivational. We got to know how the whole Mumbai Dabbawala’s system works in just three hours that to at the rush period (as someone from the Mumbai would say) and that to covering the whole of Mumbai in an environmentally safe (by using cycles and local train- a public transport).  Mumbai Dabbawala taught us that even if you don’t have a big and fancy degree, if you have the determination and dedication, you can do anything and achieve everything in the world.

The way the system of Dabbawala’s work is so efficient with minimum to none flaws. Although, there may be something they can do to improve the current services that they provide such as the tracking system of the dabbas (Tiffin) so that the customer will get to know the real time updates of the dabbas. The dabbawalas can even partner with local businesses or startups related to food providing services ( e.g. cloud kitchen) for cross-promotion and increased visibility. In the 21st century, everyone is available on one or the other social media platform; they can also expand their social media presence to attract wider audience. They can even consider expanding into new areas such as grocery or medicine delivery, leveraging the existing distribution network ( for example- I am currently staying in Mira Road due to college and my home is in Kalyan, to there may happen that I want to get something such as documents from my home for which I may not have time to go and get it by travelling 5 hours to & fro, so what I can do is contact the dabbawalas so that they will pick the documents from my home and deliver. These kinds of services are also offered by zomato but they are very expensive and they don’t generally do long distance delivery). They can utilize data analytics to understand customer preferences, optimize delivery routes, and improve service efficiency. They can offer experience packages i.e. offer cultural tours and experiences showcasing the dabbawala system to tourists and students interested in learning about this unique service. They can conduct regular audits of the delivery process to identify areas for improvement and ensure quality standards are maintained.

Although from the past reference and data, we have gathered that there have been 100% customer satisfaction, therefore the business can go on the same pace in short term. But if they want to stay in the business in the long term and grow more, they will have to do their SWOT ANALYSIS and make some changes accordingly.

A CASE STUDY

ABSTRACT

The Dabbawala Organization, known as the Dabbawala Enterprises PVT. LTD., is the first food delivery service in India, and one of the first food delivery service/systems in the world, especially on such a large scale. This makes them the forefathers for all the food delivery services present today. In this case study, I will:

  1. Introduce the Dabbawala’s, and the scope of this study.
  2. Overview Dabbawala’s case, their past and their present scenarios, and their delivery methods.
  3. Define the problems that the Dabbawala’s may/might/will face.
  4. Analyze the situation of Dabbawala’s in detail, and talk about the problems that they face in this day and age, mentioning my thought processes. Give solutions and intervene where necessary, with my reasons for the same, to help fine tune an already great organization.
  5. Give an overview of how the changes recommended by me will affect and impact the Dabbawala’s and their life and conclude the study.

INTRODUCTION

“Dabbawala’s”, a word that inspires every Mumbaikar so much every time they hear it, reminding us of the history of our city and this organization, and how it has been the backbone of the city, embedded right down to its roots. To find out more about the future of the Dabbawala Enterprises PVT. LTD., it is first very important to study the past of the organization in detail to see how they have affected the population of the city of Mumbai, the impact that they have left on the mindset of Mumbaikars, in terms of the usefulness of their services, and how all of this has set a legacy that can now be leveraged upon, and be capitalized, now and in the future.

Scope of this study:

  1. To learn, and spread awareness of the Dabbawala’s, their organization, and their work.
  2. To help find out the major problems that the Dabbawala’s might face right now, or in the near future.
  3. To find solutions for the pre-existing problems of the Dabbawala’s, and the problems that they may face in the future.
  4. Give a point of view as a third party to the organization, and give a fresh perspective.
  5. To learn how to reproduce similar values for other business models.

 

 CASE OVERVIEW

The Dabbawala’s, a legacy now, was developed due to a very simple need in the market, the requirement of a home cooked meal in a timely fashion, a trend that is followed to date by most, one of the intrinsic requirement of most Indians, as a culture. No matter the number of fancy, or exotic meals present, or cheap and quickly available the food might be, as per the individuals requirements, nothing can replace a homecooked meal.

The Dabbawala’s, formed due to the need of one such Parsi banker, caught the sight of many people, and quickly filled a market need, under the leadership of Hon. Mahadu Havaji Bache, a hardworking, dedicated and talented man with the help of 35 like-minded and like-valued men in 1890. These men, though not very educated, have left deep imprints on the city of Mumbai, covering a total distance of 60 to 70 kilometers, with two hundred thousand tiffin’s being delivered, and being brought back to where they were collected from, i.e. four hundred thousand transactions daily, within a time span of 3 hours. This is made possible by the dedicated team of five thousand dabbawala’s, under the leadership of six hundred Mukundham’s (Team Leaders of sorts), who all do a great service to their fellow man by helping feed them. Amongst all these statistics, we must also start to talk about their error ratings, which is one in sixteen million, giving them a Six Sigma Performance Rating, by the Forbes Group. This is something that a lot of huge organizations also strive to achieve, and many fail to do so, as well. On top of that, it is very impressive to note that they do this without the help of any technology, which to most is unimaginable.

To achieve a Six Sigma Performance Rating without any technology, in an age where despite having the map of the entire world at their fingertips, delivery services still make so many mistakes. This shows the mental acumen and presence of the minds of the Dabbawala’s as individuals and as an organization, and give a round of applause to the system that they have put in place for food delivery. Talking about the system that they have input to achieve such ratings, one must admit that it is rather ingenious and simple enough to be executed on such a large scale reproducibly with minimum errors. The initial coding system was developed with the help of waste threads that were discarded by tailors, but their modern technique involves using two coloured markers, green and red, on the bottom of the Dabba (Tiffin).

The Green indicates the:

  1. Pickup Location Letter mentioned on the Nine ‘O’ Clock on the bottom of the Dabba (Tiffin) indicating the pickup street of the tiffin.
  2. Pickup Stop (Station) Letter mentioned on the Twelve ‘O’ Clock on the bottom of the Dabba (Tiffin) indicating the pickup railway of the tiffin.
  3. Drop Stop (Station) Number mentioned in the centre on the bottom of the Dabba (Tiffin) indicating the drop railway of the tiffin, according to them island/station number.

The Red indicates the:

  1. Destination Code Number for the drop mentioned on the Two ‘O’ Clock on the bottom of the Dabba (Tiffin).
  2. Building Name initials mentioned on the Three ‘O’ Clock on the bottom of the Dabba (Tiffin).
  3. Floor Number for delivery mentioned on the Four ‘O’ Clock on the bottom of the Dabba (Tiffin).

The organization of the Dabbawala’s is loosely built, with a Team Leader (Mukundham’s), under whom approximately twenty to twenty five dabbawala’s operate. These Mukundham’s guide the individual dabbawala’s on how to carry out their jobs in manners that they understand due to their minimal education, and give confirmation to the Organization Leader. Each individual dabbawala has to carry forty tiffin’s to and fro, from the homes of the recipients to their offices and back. These dabbawala’s then take the tiffin’s to the point of aggregation and sorting, and are then transported to the Drop Stops, where they are again re aggregated and sorted according to the drop location codes, and then transported/distributed by the specific dabbawala carriers to specific locations. The return process works in a similar manner.

The main reason that this organization and their supply chain management works so smoothly is due to the fact that most of the decisions are taken on the field by the dabbawala’s as per their requirements, and that there is an open line of communication between the dabbawala’s and their Mukundham’s due to a rather flat organization structure, and that each individual is given respect and treated as a shareholder in the organization, rather than as just another expendable employee that most organizations do. Even the president and other heads deliver these tiffin’s, which means that they are very in touch with the process that the dabbawala’s have to follow and can understand their struggles, and hence may be able to comprehend their difficulties with more ease than other organizations which never understand the problems and concerns of those below them. Mini meetings of each sect of the organization occur monthly to give floor to the concerns and issues at the ground level, as well as any higher concerns.

Dabbawala’s, as an organization, use Zero Percent:

  2. Modern Technology
  3. Investment

And yet manage to give excellent services, at the basic, bare minimum fixed rate of INR Five Hundred to INR Seven Hundred per month, no matter the weight of the tiffin’s, or the distance they have to be carried. This makes the annual turnover in the range of INR Nine Hundred Million to INR Twelve Billion, giving each dabbawala approximately INR Fifteen Thousand to INR Twenty Thousand, and receive a yearly bonus of a month’s pay, on the festival of Diwali, after deducting minimal travelling costs, etc.

The Dabbawala’s have been studied for their delivery model, written and published about, made documentaries about by multiple news organizations such as BBC, and given as case studies by multiple prestigious colleges such as Harvard Business School, etc. They hold a World Record in Time Management and also are mentioned in the Guiness Book of World Records, and have been visited by many honorable dignitaries.

The Dabbawala’s became incorporated on 7th September 2017, as Dabbawala Enterprises PVT. LTD., and appointed dabbawala’s as contractors for their benefit, such as opening bank accounts and pension plan implementation, insurance and MediClaim policies, applying for loans, showing income proof.

Dabbawala’s have had a very colourful past, and they must be lauded for their hundred and thirty four year span of service, but as we prepare for the future, we must ruminate on what problems they might encounter in today’s modern world, which they may be unable to cope with, and how they can be overcome.

PROBLEM STATEMENT

Despite being the backbone of the city of Mumbai at one point in time and now still, and helping it to become the metropolitan that it is right now, the Dabbawala’s find themselves in grave trouble. The main sources of their trouble are:

  1. The fact that they do not use any technology, which they might not be able to continue to do in the technology and information age that the world is in currently.
  2. The increased competition in the delivery industry with the introduction of food delivery applications, restaurants own delivery systems, grocery and other general delivery applications, point to point delivery applications, etc.
  3. The increased number of restaurants, cheap and fast food available across the city.
  4. The hybrid model of work that has been adopted by most offices and employees, which may turn into a complete work from home scenario, with the decline in demand of physical presence in the offices to save the expense of office spaces and resources such as electricity and presence only in case of emergencies or important work.
  5. The fact that an entire generation of Mumbaikars who are unaware about the Dabbawala’s, as well as the people who move to the city from other parts of the country, and even the world.
  6. The problems that arise from the organizational structure is that there are no qualified persons present to focus the ‘Big Picture Problems’, rather focusing on the day to day problems. While the ‘One Day at a Time’ approach is much helpful in case of recovery, etc., here, there has to be course set here, to ensure the continuity of the survival of the Dabbawala’s, and their legacy for generations to come.
  7. The lack of expansion of the business model of the Dabbawala’s.

SITUATION ANALYSIS AND SOLUTION DISCUSSION

When we talk about analyzing a situation, we should majorly emphasize on the fact that we must not just focus on the situation mentally, but also emotionally, as the emotional quotient is equally important to the intelligence quotient, if not more. The problems faced by the Dabbawala’s affect real human lives, who cannot even be put to a value and at every stage, this point must be remembered.

We will talk about the solutions to the problems of the Dabbawala’s by mentioning the problems as per the problem statement and following up with a solution.

  • The fact that they do not use any technology, which they might not be able to continue to do in the technology and information age that the world is in currently.
    • The integration of technology is vital in the information technological age of the world. The Dabbawala’s need to be made technologically aware, as well as trained in how to use technology in their day to day life. Once these first initial technology based trainings are completed, they should be trained on how to use and operate delivery applications, both as users and delivery partners. While this happens, the Dabbawala’s must side by side begin to develop the application for Dabbawala Enterprises PVT. LTD. which can be used for delivery, as most major companies do. The Dabbawala’s will have an edge due to our cutthroat rates and extremely efficient services that we have been providing for the last one hundred and thirty four years. The Dabbawala’s will also offer one time trials, and one time delivery rates that match these other delivery platforms, as well as a monthly program as the Dabbawala’s already do, but with a higher cost, i.e. INR One Thousand to INR One Thousand Five Hundred, increasing the profits of the organization and also to cover the costs for the application development. The application will also have features of No Contact/No Disturbance deliveries, which will help increase its reach.
  • The increased competition in the delivery industry with the introduction of food delivery applications, restaurants own delivery systems, grocery and other general delivery applications, point to point delivery applications, etc.
    • The Dabbawala’s have a very sound reputation of deliveries across the city. As the Dabbawala’s enter the E-Delivery market, these competitors will never be able to match the efficiency and the costs of the Dabbawala’s. Further, the Dabbawala’s can start to tie up with restaurants ourselves and enter the E-Cooked Food Delivery Market. The Dabbawala’s could also open their own cloud kitchens that will prepare healthy homecooked meals as a future option, also providing dietician regulated meals as well, as the Dabbawala’s main USP is hoe made healthy food, which we can market and advertise to declare the Dabbawala’s entrance in the market.
  • The increased number of restaurants, cheap and fast food available across the city.
    • The Dabbawala’s can start to tie up with restaurants ourselves and enter the E-Cooked Food Delivery Market, just how major market players have done, only at the Dabbawala’s cheaper rates with much more efficiency rates. Why would anyone choose anything over the Dabbawala’s?
  • The hybrid model of work that has been adopted by most offices and employees, which may turn into a complete work from home scenario, with the decline in demand of physical presence in the offices to save the expense of office spaces and resources such as electricity and presence only in case of emergencies or important work.
    • The Dabbawala’s could open their own cloud kitchens that will prepare healthy homecooked meals for people with no family in the city or loving alone, also providing dietician regulated meals, as the Dabbawala’s main USP is home-made healthy food, which they can market and advertise to declare the Dabbawala’s entrance in the market.
  • The fact that an entire generation of Mumbaikars who are unaware about the Dabbawala’s, as well as the people who move to the city from other parts of the country, and even the world.
    • Dabbawala’s are an integral part of the Financial Capital of India, which means that they must advertise themselves to keep maintaining a strong public image and declare that they still exist and strive to serve people with the perfection that they are renowned for. Marketing the good qualities of the Dabbawala’s will not only help to spread awareness but talk about the continual existence of the Dabbawala’s, their sustainability in the market and increase customers as well.
  • The problems that arise from the organizational structure is that there are no qualified persons present to focus the ‘Big Picture Problems’, rather focusing on the day to day problems. While the ‘One Day at a Time’ approach is much helpful in case of recovery, etc., here, there has to be course set here, to ensure the continuity of the survival of the Dabbawala’s, and their legacy for generations to come.
    • The influx of new blood to bring in fresh ideas, as well as keeping a balance of experienced persons will help the organization to thrive. The organization must develop a hierarchy for reporting orders, to ensure smooth resolution of problems with the input of conflict resolution team, made of new employees of all diversities, i.e. gender, culture, age and old employees who have worked in the field and are more in touch with the problems of the field to address all possible concerns and find their solution. The organization must also take care to progress, but never lose touch with their roots, to ensure smooth progress, and always have good conflict solutions as they have done for the past hundred and thirty four years.
  • The lack of expansion of the business model of the Dabbawala’s.
    • The Dabbawala’s must consider expansion to other cities of India, such as Delhi, which has good city coverage due to the presence of the Metro System, with the help of the government, as they have done in Mumbai. Once this is implemented, and implemented throughout India, foreign expansion must also be considered in places such as London, with great ‘Tube’ connectivity and New York, with excellent ‘Subway’ systems present. With the rates and efficiency of the Dabbawala’s, they can dominate the world in terms of deliveries.

IMPLICATIONS AND CONCLUSION

The Dabbawala’s have been this city’s support system for very long. It is time that we give back to them, by helping them move into the future, along with the city, so we can coexist and continue to support each other for generations to come. I think, the solutions provided to the problems that I could think of should be implemented immediately to help increase the profitability of Dabbawala Enterprises PVT. LTD., and help improve the quality of life of the Dabbawala’s, their families. I hope you are satisfied with the case study that I have provided, and have as much fun reading and analysing it as I did analysing and writing this case study.

The word “Dabbawala” in Hindi can be interpreted as “lunchbox carrier.” The Mumbai Dabbawalas represent an extraordinary & exceptionally efficient system, operate in a decentralized manner, which has acquired international admiration because of its simplicity. The Mumbai Dabbawalas are individuals clad in traditional white attire and Gandhi caps, responsible for delivering wholesome home-cooked meals from residences to respective offices for Mumbaikars daily. With origins extending over a century, they have become an iconic embodiment of thriving city like Mumbai’s dynamic culture. As they operate their food delivery service on four essential & unique pillars: organization, management, processes, and culture.

As per the Forbes magazine, the Dabbawalas holding & maintaining remarkable Six Sigma rating of 99.9999 in the early 2000s, indicating error ratio is 1 in 16 million which a testament to unparalleled accuracy is. Today Dabbawalas have become integral part of the city’s cultural tapestry, with their unwavering reliability, and strong community ethos. “The customer is always right” is a slogan that Dabbawalas have wholeheartedly embraced, as a positive customer relationship is a necessity for the survival of their business.

The vigor of dabbawalas is in their capacity to deliver vast number of deliveries every single day. The whole process serves as an imperative learning of management techniques & skills such as:-

  1. Not forgetting the core purpose & mission
  2. Time management – following the strict adherence to schedules, precision
  3. Employees are a valuable assets – imparting them a sense of worth
  4. Effective communication & also enabling to foster a culture of collaboration.
  5. Simplicity – Don’t overcomplicated things, as they largely depends on the people they serve. What really the customer wants (customer-centric), as they are the backbone & critical components driving the entire operation.

  9. Following unique colour-coding system – the success of this method is operational efficiency by a series of distinct colour marks & particular set of numbers to segregate the dabbas to avoid mixup errors.

The Dabbawala’s profound spiritual connection, unique work ethic hold a competitive edge. Their deep-seated reasons to perceive the act of catering to the customer as a respect for a higher authority.

Much like many other well-established organizations, even startup companies face their own set of challenges & risks in a rapidly changing world, the dabbawalas are no exception. In any business, inevitable risks will arise irrespective of which methodology is being employed, such risks can be mitigated but not entirely eliminated.

Challenges encountered by Dabbawalas & strategies for future sustainability

  1. The Dabbawalas continue to be majorly reliant on public transportation particularly local trains & bicycles. Since 2017, air-conditioned local trains were introduced by Indian Railways. That led to alteration to the local train schedule disrupting the workflow & placing in a difficult situation for dabbawalas as AC local train doesn’t have separate luggage compartment which can lead to delay & discrepancies in tiffin delivery.

It’s not feasible for them to board the substantial amount of baggage.

Solution: The railway authorities should contemplate on the provision of a separate luggage compartment in AC local trains.

  1. Dabbwalas still continue to rely predominantly on conventional methods, with minimal or no technology which might cause a hurdle in the long run. There is a significant rise of food delivery apps like Zomato, Swiggy & Uber Eats leading to changing consumer behaviour. Especially younger generations opting for these apps hereby diminishing the appeal & demand for the traditional home-cooked meals delivered by dabbawalas. As western lifestyles & fast food become more prevalent among the youth.

Solution: By adopting to technology gradually, the Dabbawalas could develop their own apps & website to highlight, promote the value of home-cooked meals, & their significance to younger generations. It can even be promoted by collaborating with Nutritionists and Fitness Experts, Teaming up with various health & wellness programs.

Launching different campaigns that focuses on the cultural heritage & nutritional benefits of home-cooked meals could resonate with them.

Furthermore, with the help of social media platforms it can be used to showcase customer testimonials, behind-the-scenes content, & stories of the dabbawalas could help build a strong, relatable brand that appeals younger generations.

  1. The absence of succession planning as younger individuals are reluctant to pursue this profession it could be due to physically demanding nature, relatively low income.

Solution: To attract young talents, this can be achieved by possibly offering them the opportunity of part-time work positions such as administrative or customer service related tasks.

Also showing success stories of young dabbawalas or those who have progressed within the system can inspire others to consider.

Progressing with the advancement of technology into the dabbawala system can make the job less physically demanding & more appealing to tech-savvy youth.

Conducting awareness programs to showcase the community impact, cultural importance associated with being a dabbawala can attract interest from younger generations.

  1. The Covid-19 pandemic’s impact remains profoundly significant to dabbawala community are resilient despite struggles to make ends meet as majority of individuals now prefer remote work or work-from-home, reducing the demand for lunchbox deliveries.

Solution: Dabbawalas can expand their delivery services not only to office workers but also to provide family-sized meals to households. Adapting to remote work trends. They can also broaden their services by including the delivery of groceries, household essentials or medicines, providing additional income sources during times of reduced lunchbox demand.

  1. In today’s fast paced world to sustain from economic downturns & inflation which is rising costs of living in Mumbai have put financial pressure on the dabbawalas as it can strain their financial stability.

Solution: By diversifying revenue streams they can expand their service offerings which was mentioned above will help in attracting new customer base & increase in income level.

To achieve it, providing training in areas such as financial management, technology to improve the quality and efficiency of their services would be beneficial.

Hence, tackling these challenges is essential for their continued success & sustainability in an ever-evolving environment.
