Dalmia Institute of Management Studies and Research (NLDIMSR) is a business school situated in Mira Road, Maharashtra. It was formed under the aegis of the N. L. Dalmia Educational Society, founded by Shri Niranjanlal Dalmia.   • The service industry has come a long way since the days of delivering milk and newspapers to homes. In the globalizing world economy, ‘service’ often means offshore IT professionals working night shifts for corporations in faraway lands. But in a city like Mumbai, a great example of low-profile services comes from the ubiquitous bicycle-riding dabbawalas.

 

  • At-home dining in an office is becoming a rarity in Mumbai since many working professionals stay in the office for long hours. Lunch hour is usually taken at one’s desk. Cooking for an office lunchbox is not an option for those living with family. Neither is it possible to go back home for a quick lunch. Fortunately, the spartan lunchbox from home or tiffin from caterers is of good quality and comes at an affordable price. The reason, many believe, is the unique supply chain of tiffin delivery that is almost error-free.

 

  • In the 5-6 hours of collection and delivery each day, this supply chain acts faster than most in the world. Local dabbawalas in Mumbai deliver tinned lunches from consumers’ homes to their workplaces and return the empty tins to the consumers’ residences for the next day’s meal. They blend low-cost convenience with heavy usage. It is not surprising then that the usage is now popularly referred to as The Dabbawala Network.

 

  • Statistics from recent years show that 160,000 to 200,000 individual tiffin deliveries are made in various locations. Mistake rates are one in eight million. Navi Mumbai, which has been supplied for close to a decade, now dispenses over 125,000 Tifins. At current 18% compounded annual growth rates, the lakh-mark will be touched soon. Can the dabbawalas cope?

 

  • So who are the dabbawalas? Very simply, the word “dabbawala” means “one who carries a box”. Every working day, over 5000 dabbawalas or lunch-box carriers, as they are known in common parlance, distribute a reported number of over 200,000 dabbas or lunch-boxes that they pick up from the residences of the urban working population in the suburbs of the city of Mumbai and deliver them to the workplace at the right time. The workers eat their home-cooked lunch at their workplace and place the empty boxes in the dabbawalas’ carriers, who then return the boxes to the workers’ homes. This formal and efficient delivery system between residence and workplace is accomplished with few mistakes, indicating that the dabbawalas are virtually perfect in an error-free supply chain system that is making the right and timely decisions that are required for effective delivery.

 

  • The history of the present-generation dabbawalas dates back for more than one century. It is said that in the time of the British rule, a Parsi who decided to have a home-cooked lunch in his office gave this daunting task a thought of how he would go about it? Of course, the privileged English people had their Englishmen staff who attended to their daily meals; the well-off Indian people had their servants who catered to their daily requirement of a mid-day meal. But with the beginning of the industrial revolution and mass migrations from rural India, a new workforce flocked to the city of Mumbai seeking employment. These were not the privileged, nor did they have the capacity to hire servants to attend to their daily meals at their workplace, yet they still wanted to have the home-cooked lunch rather than eat out in a noisy restaurant.

The Dabbawala Process:-

The Dabbawala system is a marvel of logistics that has been operating in Mumbai for over a century. It involves the daily delivery of freshly cooked meals from homes to offices across the city.

Here’s a breakdown of the process:

Management Learnings from the Dabbawala’s.

Dabbawala’s Enterprises Pvt Ltd had a guest session last week on our Campus, at

N.L. Dalmia Institute of Management and Research. It was a very insightful lecture on our part. They spoke to us about the struggles they face on a daily basis and the struggles that we might face since we are bound to move forward onto our corporate lives.

I find it so interesting that the error rate of such a traditionally driven business model with almost no technological involvement has been less than 0.001 percentage.

Dabbawala Enterprises Pvt Ltd promotes employment and better standards of living for the people they serve and also, for it’s employees. But most importantly, they love what they do for a living.

The business model of Dabbawala Enterprises Pvt Ltd which is over a 130 years old withholds an influential role and has such a tremendous impact in the urban and suburban lives of Mumbai.

To sum it all up, Dabbawalas Enterprises Pvt Ltd gave us valuable insights on various managerial and corporate aspects. They are as follows:

Towards the end of the guest session, there was time allotted for the Question- Answers. During which, a lot of the students asked various kinds of intriguing questions regarding the scalability of the business of the Dabbawala Enterprises Pvt Ltd, if they will maintain the current technology for the boxes’ distribution and if there will be women Dabbawali’s in the near future. The Dabbawalas’ made sure to answer them all and agreed to our opinions and speculated our point of views.

I curiously wait for the 7th anniversary of Dabbawala’s on 7th September which will be held at N. L. Dalmia Institute of Management Studies and Research.

So, Who are the Dabbawalas?

The dedicated Dabbawalas have faithfully delivered homemade meals to Mumbai’s hungry workforce since 1890, establishing a system that persists to this day. This firmly-rooted operation was pioneered by resolute Mahadu Havaji Bache, who started with a mere handful of thirty-five porters. Presently, the organization comprises approximately 5000 Dabbawalas who capably handle about 2,00,000 lunch containers on a daily basis. Their vast delivery area now spans from the distant edges of Virar all the way to the bustling centre of Churchgate, covering a substantial band of 60 to 70 km in length.

Mumbai Dabbawala started their journey in 1890. It was founded by Hon. Mahadu Havaji Bache. Back then, only 35 dabbawalas were present. Bache ji started this dabbawala system when the British were ruling our country. New government offices, post offices, bridges, etc., were being constructed, and there were no fast-food options like McDonald’s or Pizza Hut.

The idea to start this system came up when a Parsi banker employed a person to bring homemade food to the site of work. Mumbai Dabbawalas now has a total of 5,000 employees. Despite most of the employees being illiterate, their error rate is 1 in 16 million transactions. They handle 200,000 dabbas, which equates to 400,000 dabbas annually. The cost of the service is a reasonable price of ₹500-700 per month.

Dabbawalas operate in groups of 25-30, headed by a group leader. They have a coding system through which they work, and their business is sustainable because they don’t use any modern technology. Their business is cost-effective because there is no use of vehicles that require fuel, zero percent of investment, and there is a hundred percent customer satisfaction.

While they aren’t formally educated, they follow a management structure with a team structure and a flat hierarchy, which helps keep their business costs low. Every group has a Muqaddam who knows the ground situation. They focus on what they do best. Over 130 years, they have been involved solely in logistics. They could have ventured into catering services, but they didn’t take the risk of compromising customer satisfaction, as there was a possibility that people might have disliked the taste of the food.

They could have used a bike instead of a cycle but chose not to for the sake of punctuality. They also use visuals and standardization, believing that a picture is worth a thousand words. This standardization process helps in reducing logistical complications.

However, when technology and the COVID-19 pandemic came into the picture, they saw a downturn. The company faced two major problems. First, technology: companies like Swiggy and Zomato started their businesses in India, and Mumbai Dabbawala began to see a decline. Swiggy and Zomato offered food delivery in shorter times with numerous discounts, leading people to switch to these services.

Second, with the pandemic, people started working from home, causing dabbawalas to lose their jobs and seek different employment. Their workforce reduced significantly.

While every business faces a downturn, it can be scaled up again with the right strategies. The Dabbawalas can expand their services to cater to a larger audience by setting up in different cities and regions with demand for organized food delivery.
