There are a few ideas that I want to share with Dabbawal Group to increase their business and income:

Now, apart from office workers, there are also many students coming to Mumbai for their graduation or postgraduation from across India. So, the taste of every person is different according to their state.

As Dabbawala is already a brand that everyone knows for their punctuality, honesty, and time management. They can add the people from different states who live in Mumbai to their business.

The people that are from different states can be homemakers or street food vendors. Those people will make the food in their particular state, so the customer will get the same taste as their own home.

Dabbawala can spread awareness of their food with the dabbas that they are delivering daily. They can also collaborate with different colleges for the lunch boxes for the students who come from outside of Mumbai.

In this way, they will provide more jobs for the homemakers, who have not even a single connection in the city.

Dabbawala can launch an application where they have options to choose their home state, taste (normal, medium spicy, very spicy), veg/nonveg, preferences (rice or roti), along with the address of delivery and personal information. In this there is also an option for monthly/weekly lunches.

From this app, any person, either from an office or a college, can avail of the Dabbawala service within Mumbai.

They have to establish their different centers in  Mumbai that will be near office and college areas from where they will deliver the lunch boxes. Near all the centers, they have to collaborate with different people from different states so that they can provide hot and fresh food to the customers and get 100% satisfaction.

In the app there is also the feature to track their dabba, and if someday you don’t want your dabba, you can tell the dabbawalla and the food maker, which avoids the wastage of food.

Apart from this, Dabbawala can also increase their area with the same planning of delivery and food cooking, because now a days there are lots of colleges that are opened in the outskirts of Mumbai.

Advantages that Dabbawalla has over Swiggy and Zomato:

  • Dabbawala are punctual; they have their own way of working without any use of technology.
  • They use bicycles and local trains to deliver the boxes, so there is no chance of getting late due to traffic.
  • They have an experienced and powerful workforce.
  • Responsibility for each area is given to that person only who knows everything about that area.

  • Eco-friendly as they don’t use vehicles and trains.
  • No plastic use because they work on both sides. Take the dabba to the office and take it back. But in the case of Swiggy and Zomato, they use polyethene’s plastic cutlery.
  • Generate employment even for less educated people.

The history of dabbawalla is quite interesting. It all started when English were still ruling India. This was the time when there was no Government formed, no fast food chains were there to go out and eat. One Parsi banker employed a worker to bring out lunch from his home at the work place and everyone enjoyed the food as well as liked the idea and they asked him to do the same.

And this slowly evolved into what Dabbawala today is. Dabbawala system in Mumbai, India has long been admired for its highly efficient and reliable lunch delivery service. Delivering over 200,000 home-cooked meals to office workers each day, the Dabbawallas have achieved a remarkable level of accuracy, with an estimated error rate of only 1 in 16 million deliveries. Beyond their impressive operational statistics, the Dabbawallas offer valuable insights that can inform management practices in a wide range of industries.

Imagine a bustling anthill, where thousands of ants work in perfect harmony, each one knowing its role and carrying out its tasks with precision. The system is efficient, resilient and highly organized, enabling these tiny creatures to accomplish feats far greater than their size might suggest. Now, transport this imagery to the heart of Mumbai, where a different kind of colony operates with similar efficiency- The Dabbawalas.  Just like ants, Dabbawalas too are masters of organized chaos, moving with purpose in a bustling world. They thrive on teamwork, turning individual efforts into collective success, all while adapting swiftly to changing environments. Their secret? A blend of discipline and instinct that turns the ordinary into the extraordinary.

The Mumbai Dabbawala system is a fascinating story that began over a century ago, born out of a simple yet profound need. In the late 19th century, as Mumbai (then Bombay) was transforming into a bustling hub of commerce and industry, a Parsi banker- Mahadeo Havaji Bachche was craving home- cooked food at his office. He gave the responsibility to a person to deliver home- cooked lunch to his office. Many people appreciated the idea as most people found themselves missing the taste of home. The food available in the city’s markets and restaurants did not suit their traditional palates, and many craved the comfort of a home- cooked meal.

Mahadeo Havaji Bachche, a visionary, saw an opportunity to bridge this gap. In 1890, he started a lunch delivery service, where home- cooked meals would be picked up from the worker’s homes and delivered directly to their workplaces. This idea struck a chord with the city’s growing workforce, and soon, what began as a small service, grew into an extensive, highly coordinated operation with over 5,000 Dabbawalas, as they are known, working tirelessly across the city.

These Dabbawalas became the lifeline of Mumbai’s working class. Armed with bicycles, and later relying on the city’s sprawling local train network, these dedicated men developed a complex system of coding and logistics to ensure that each tiffin- over 200,000 each day- reaches its destination with astonishing accuracy. Their commitment goes beyond just delivering food- it’s about preserving a connection to home, culture, and tradition in a rapidly modernizing world. For over a century, the Dabbawalas of Mumbai were an unshakable force, relentlessly delivering home- cooked meals to office workers with near- perfect precision. Their extremely reliable system is studied across top- class business schools and admired worldwide. However, in 2020, something happened that even this time- tested network couldn’t withstand: Covid -19. The pandemic didn’t just disrupt their operations; it upended their entire way of life. As the world grappled with lockdowns and social distancing, the Dabbawalas faced challenges they had never encountered  before, forcing them to adapt in ways that would redefine their future.

For the first time in their 130 year old history, the Dabbawalas had to stop their services. The lockdowns imposed during the early days of the pandemic made it impossible for them to navigate the city as they once did. With public transport shut down and most office goers confined to their homes, the familiar sight of Dabbawalas weaving through traffic with their lunch- filled crates disappeared almost overnight. The once- bustling operation came to a standstill, a stark reminder of the pandemic’s power to disrupt even the most resilient systems. From a whopping 5000 plus Dabbawalas delivering  200,000 lunch boxes per day, the number of Dabbawalas in the post pandemic world has dwindled to 400-500 delivering 5000-10,000 lunch boxes a day.

The reasons for the massive drop in numbers could either be due to a lack of demand or be due to a lack of supply.

The lack of demand might be attributed to several post- pandemic changes in work culture. One significant factor is the rise in remote and hybrid work models. As more people work from home, the need for commuting has decreased which directly impacts the demand for lunch deliveries. Another reason could be the shift in preferences. Instead of getting their lunch delivered through Dabbawala service, people are either bringing lunch from home or prefer to order from office canteens or nearby ‘Gharguti ‘ (home cooked) eateries.

In order to tackle with the challenges of lack of demand, Dabbawalas can take the following measures:

  1. Digital integration: Create an app to allow customers to book Dabbawalas online. This could help attract a tech- savvy customer base and make the service more accessible. People can add a pick up address on the app where the customers can either add their home address if food is being prepared at home or they can add an alternate address if their lunch needs to be picked up from the house of their preferred home cook.
  2. Tie- ups: Tie- up with ‘Gharguti’ eateries. The app will display a list of ‘Gharguti’ eateries they have tied up with and through the app, people can order their favorite meals from a ‘Gharguti’ eatery of their desire. The assigned Dabbawala can then collect the order and get it delivered to the customer.
  3. Diversify deliveries: Expand beyond just lunchbox deliveries to include other types of parcels, such as groceries, documents, or even medicines.
  4. Corporate partnerships: Partner with offices and businesses to offer bulk delivery services, ensuring steady and consistent demand.
  5. Community Engagement: Engage with the local community through events, partnerships or social initiatives to strengthen the presence.
  6. Subscription services: Introduce monthly or yearly subscription models for regular customers, offering discounts or perks.

 

The pandemic caused economic hardships, as many Dabbawalas are daily wage earners. As the pandemic stretched on, it became clear that the world of work was changing permanently. With many companies adopting hybrid or long- term work from home policies, the demand for the Dabbawalas’ services plummeted. The traditional customer base of office- goers dwindled, leaving the Dabbawalas to face an uncertain future. Some began exploring new avenues, such as delivering groceries or partnering with food delivery platforms. Many even returned to their villages to be close to their family. All of which have resulted in a shortage of manpower which has resulted in a major lack of supply.

To increase their workforce, Dabbawalas could consider several strategies:

  1. Recruitment drives: Launch targeted recruitment campaigns, focusing on local communities and areas with high unemployment. Set up recruitment booths or events where people can directly inquire about job opportunities. These events can include demonstrations of the work, question and answer sessions and informal interviews.
  2. Incentives and benefits: Offer competitive wages, transportation allowance, health benefits and incentives to attract and retain employees. This financial support can instill a sense of safety and support thus making the transition into the job more appealing.
  3. Employee referrals: Encourage current employees to refer friends or family members, possibly with referral bonuses.

MANAGEMENT LEARNING’S FROM DABBAWALA

About 125 years back, a Parsi banker wanted to have home cooked food in office and gave this responsibility to the first ever Dabbawala. Many people liked the idea and the demand for Dabba delivery soared. It was all informal and individual effort in the beginning, but visionary Mahadeo Havaji Bachche saw the opportunity and started the lunch delivery service in its present team-delivery format with 100 Dabbawalas. The word ‘dabbawala’ is a composite word, made from ‘dabba’, meaning box, and ‘wallah’, loosely translated as carrier. Dabbawalas, sometimes known as tiffin wallahs, are essentially delivery men, who form a vast lunchbox delivery and return system, ferrying home- and restaurant-cooked hot lunches, known as tiffins, to India’s working population.The boxes are collected from households in the late-morning. From there, they are loaded onto a cart and transported to their destinations using predominantly bikes and railways. The route of each tiffin is denoted using a hand-painted labeling system of symbols and colours, indicating the collection address, the train station it is destined for, and the final address of the recipient. After lunchtime, the whole system is reversed and the tiffins are returned to the households they were collected from in the morning.This system means that every worker, regardless of their palette, preferences, or dietary requirements, will be satisfied with what they know and love from home. Instead of ordering a takeaway or eating out, every customer can have a warm, fresh and homemade meal. Beyond this, the dabbawalas work also has a religious dimension to it, as these workers see themselves as carrying out God’s work. Coupled with the act of giving, this produces a profession that serves God through serving humanity. This is reflected in their slogan, “Anna daan is maha daan”, meaning “donating food is the best charity”. This humble nature may be what makes them obsessed with providing a great service for their customers. As each man is responsible for his own clients, they pride themselves on customer service and professionalism. Despite Mumbai being the commercial capital of India, and a tech hub, the dabbawala fleet grows about 5-10% per year. Having maintained an exemplary record of no strikes and no court cases since their inception, Mumbai dabbawalas are amongst the top 50 entrepreneurs of the country.
