Dabbawalas are serving our nation right since British People ruled our country. “Making the Right Tiffin reach at Right Time to the Right Client” is what Dabbawalas are specialised for, is what Dabbawalas are known for. How do they Make this possible? And even that serving the nation for over 100+ Years what is so special in them, What kind of Branding always helps them to stay ahead of their competitors? That is the strong network, strong team of 5000+ Dabbawalas because of which our city of Mumbai never stays hungry. This strong team of Dabbawalas ensures that they make the Right tiffin, Reach the Right Client at the Right time. Food delivery apps like Swiggy, Zomato and instant same day delivery service offering platform, “WeFast”, with their lightning-quick deliveries and algorithmic precision, threaten to drown out the gentle clinking of the Dabbawalas’ steel tiffin carriers. Just like Uber and Ola offer two applications one for consumer like us and one for the Drivers who wish to Join Ola & Uber Fleet to Drive Cabs, Dabbawalas can take the initiative and work for Developing similar 2 apps, one which the consumer like us will use and one which the Dabbawalas who deliver tiffin will be using. There are 2 ways of operations which Dabbawalas can aim at performing to deliver tiffin under new initiative:

  1. They can continue first meeting at a spot bringing together all tiffins and then delivering them as per orders received on Mobile Application Platform.
  2. Assume anyone in Chembur books the order for delivering Tiffin through Dabbawala App, so Any Dabbawala nearby has to accept request collect Tiffin and deliver the Tiffin to Destination.

Revenue and Pricing Aspects

 So according to the data available across web sources the current yearly turnover of Dabbawalas accounts to ₹90 crores. So considering there are 5000 Dabbawalas delivering tiffin so following is the calculation of per month income of Dabbawala:

90,00,00,000/12/5000 = ₹15,000 per month.

So as per this each Dabbawala is currently earning income of ₹15,000 per month.

Also, as per the information available on website, around 2,00,000 Mumbaikars have used Dabbawala service to deliver tiffins, so in order to identify approximate consumer spending for using Dabbawala service per month, calculation is as follows:

90,00,00,000/12/2,00,000 = ₹375 per month.

So according to above calculation each Dabbawala earns ₹375 per month from each consumer availing Dabbawala service for delivering tiffins.

Making a breakthrough, penetration in market:

India’s food delivery market is substantial and rapidly growing. Mumbai is one of the largest and most affluent cities in India, with a high density of population and a thriving food culture. It’s safe to assume that it contributes significantly to the overall market.

Non Availablity of Home cooked food and desire to try out new food, attracts consumers to order food from these platforms. But consumers ordering food from these platforms might not order food regularly considering health concerns, on the other hand home cooked food is such that it can be consumed everyday. So lets assume that each weekend days these platforms gets a chance to deliver food to consumers, or few days from a week to deliver food to office working employees as customers. But just imagine the home cooked food which Dabbawalas deliver from client’s own home to them, the food which can be consumed everyday and does not affect the health of consumers as it is being affected by food delivered from restaurants by above platforms, just imagine how big upper hand Dabbawalas can get by delivering food everyday a week as compared to only weekend or specific days a week.

Speaking about Zomato, their per year revenue stands at ₹86.9 billions which is equal to ₹8690 crores  the annual number of active Zomato users in 2023 was ₹58 million which is equal to ₹5.8 crores Therefore, consumer spending for using Zomato service per month, calculation is as follows:

So according to above calculation each Zomato order earns ₹125 per month from each consumer availing Zomato service for delivering food.

As per data of 2020, Zomato across India has total number of 2,85,000 employees which is approximate 57 times of total number of Dabbawala team, as Scalability increases cost decreases. Team Dabbawalas can focus on making their team more big which will help them earn more. Increasing their price from ₹375 to near ₹500 per consumer spending on order per month might help to earn ₹125 more per month per consumer which aggregates to ₹30,00,00,000 (30 crores) additional profit (125 hiked price per month per customer * 12 no of months * 2,00,000 existing no of customers). This additional profit over existing 90,00,00,000 (90 crores) revenue can help develop Service of Dabbawalas to a greater extent.

The dabbawala system in Mumbai is a unique and efficient food delivery network that has become a case study in supply chain management worldwide. The dabbawala started in the late 19th century, this system was made to provide home-cooked meals to office workers in Mumbai, who often had no time to return home for lunch. The term “dabbawala” is derived from “dabba,” meaning a lunchbox, and “wala,” meaning the person who carries it. The dabbawala system was started by Mahadeo Havaji Bachche in 1890. At the start, it served a small number of people, but as Mumbai grew into a metropolitan city, the demand grew rapidly. Today, around 5,000 dabbawallas deliver over 200,000 lunchboxes daily.

Even though dabbawallas use minimal technology, the dabbawallas have achieved a great recognition and trust from the people of Mumbai. The process starts with the dabbawala collecting the lunchbox from the customer’s home. The box is then transported through a network of bicycles, bikes, and trains, and finally delivered to the customer at their workplace.

To avoid the challenges and backlash of the dabbawala system, they can improvise by going with technology, such as creating an application or website to order food and delivering the wanted to the customers rapidly.

Management Learning’s from Dabbawala and the Vision Ahead

A Dabbawala, sometimes known as tiffinwalas are essentially delivery men, who form a vast lunchbox delivery and return system, ferrying home-cooked hot lunches, known as tiffins for India’s working population. Since 1890, dressed in white outfit and traditional Gandhi Cap, Mumbai Army of 5000 Dabbawalas are fulfilling the hunger of almost 200,000 Mumbaikars daily.

It all started when a Parsi banker gave the responsibility of fulfilling his urge to have home cooked food in office to the first ever Dabbawala about 125 years ago. Eventually the demand for Dabba delivery soared. Initially it was just an informal and individual effort, but visionary Mahadeo Havaji Bachche saw it as an opportunity and started the lunch delivery service in its present team-delivery format with 100 Dabbawalas.

‘Work is worship’, ‘Serving people is serving God’, ‘Annadan is Mahadan’, ‘Time is money’, ‘Unity is power’ are some of the slogans that Mumbai Dabbawalas believe in. It is also believed that the descendants of Dabbawalas were the warriors in the army of Shivaji Maharaj. Dabbawalas are Marathas from Varkari sect & are from remote villages around Mumbai.

These Dabbawalas operate in group of 25-30, headed by a group leader. There are more than one group operating in one segment. As far as individual Dabbawala’s workload is concerned, each Dabbawala is required to collect from home, deliver at office and return empty tiffins to home, 40 tiffins each. Average earning of each Dabbawala is Rs.15000 per month.

Mumbai Dabbawalas achieve Six Sigma accuracy in their performance (99.999999) i.e. the error rate is 1 in 16 million transactions. They use zero % fuel, zero % modern technology, zero % investment, zero % disputes but 100% customer satisfaction. They only use local trains for their operations.

The Dabbawalas emphasize simplicity in their processes, using a basic symbol-based coding system on lunchboxes to manage deliveries. The coding system created by their forefather is still prominent in 21st century. Initially it was simple colour coding but now since Mumbai is widely spread metro with 3 local train routes, our coding has also evolved into alpha numeric characters.

Mumbai’s Dabbawala’s don’t just carry meals. They stand for discipline and punctuality in the city of dreams. The core strength of Dabbawalas is that they complete a large number of deliveries in a day. Additionally, teamwork, honesty, discipline, ownership, time management, low cost, customer satisfaction, service commitment, process consistency, etc. also contributes to their strengths.

Dabbawalas are essentially self-managed, handling hiring, logistics, pricing, and customer relations themselves. It is a process from which one can learn many management skills. These Dabbawalas are very well known for how well they treat the people they work with, how they communicate, how they manage their time and how dedicated they are towards their work. They might not be very well educated, but when it comes to their work, they know it more than anyone else. Dabbawalas stand as a strong support for each other and do not believe in competing amongst themselves, which helps them to give the best results for themselves and their co-workers.

Dabbawalas got a lot of name, fame and publicity but there was no significant change in their lives. They are facing challenges as the market undergoes a transformation. For example, need to advance their skills, like learning to speak English, embracing technology, etc. Other challenges faced by them include floods, railways strikes, etc.

However, the major problem faced by them was that they do not have an income proof which invites numerous other problems such as no credits available, no bank account, no insurance security, no mediclaim facility, no pension plan, children of Dabbawalas cannot pursue higher education, no access to bank loans such as housing loans, personal loans, credit cards, education loan, etc.

Therefore, in order to overcome these problems faced by the Dabbawalas, Dabbawala Enterprise Pvt. Ltd. was incorporated on 7th September, 2017. The main objective of this company is the economic and financial benefit of Dabbawalas. It is a commercial company of Dabbawalas working for their economic welfare and financial inclusion and safety. Dabbawalas work as contractors in this company. Mr. Sandeep S. Gaikar, Mr. Sunil P. Gavande and Mr. Sharad G. More constitute the Board of Directors.

Dabbawala Enterprise Pvt. Ltd. helped the Dabbawalas with opening of bank account, issue of payment slip (which served as their income proof), filing of TDS certificate – Form 16, filing of income tax return, interest free smart phones, 10 lakh insurance, 1 lakh mediclaim policy for whole family, free clothing, etc.

The future plans of this enterprise includes NPS Pension plans, Interest free laptops, less interest home loans, educational loan for children and gold and silver reward for Dabbawalas. It also aims to launch food products, its own factory and to become a Multinational Food Company.

The world famous Dabbawala system took its worst hit due to COVID-19 which resulted in thousands of Dabbawalas retreating to their original homes in rural locations, many turned to subsistence farming on small plots, worked as daily wage workers, while some turned to odd jobs such as gardeners, security guards, deliverymen, cooks, etc.

Despite many initiatives by the Dabbawalas to compensate the losses incurred during Covid pandemic, they have nonetheless seen a decline in the demand for dabbas. There can be various reasons behind it, some of which are listed. First, the use of online food delivery platforms such as Zomato, Swiggy, etc. has skyrocketed post covid, severely affecting the sales of Dabbawalas. Dabbawalas are finding a hard time competing with these online food delivery platforms. Second, these days, a lot of workplaces provide their employees with good canteen facilities, complimentary lunches, food cards, food vouchers, etc. This has in turn reduced the need to carry tiffins (dabbas), significantly affecting the business of Dabbawalas. Third, after the pandemic, numerous companies have begun offering the option to work from home to their employees. As a result, employees now have their lunch at home, eliminating the need of packed lunches (dabbas), which has had a considerable impact on the Dabbawala’s business. Fourth, many homemakers have started setting up stalls near offices to sell their home-made food. Because of easy and quick access to home-made food, many employees prefer to have their lunches from these stalls, which significantly hampers the business of Dabbawalas.

Following are some of the solutions that I could think of, considering the above stated problems faced by the Dabbawalas. First and the foremost thing is that they should digitize majority of their processes, including taking orders online, online tracking, online payment, etc. by developing their own mobile application, website, etc. Further, they should also make an effort to collaborate with online food delivery platforms like Zomato, Swiggy, and others. They should try and convince them to include ‘Dabbas from Dabbawalas’ as an option on their platform. This will encourage the users of Zomato and Swiggy to explore this option, which might increase the demand for Dabbawalas. This option will help in giving a boost to Dabbawala sales without hampering their individuality. It might also lead to successful marketing of Dabbawalas.

I strongly believe that Dabbawalas should expand their business by entering a new segment, called ‘Dabbawalas Kitchen’, wherein they can employ several homemakers to help with preparation of food as well as Dabbas. Along with delivering home-cooked food from houses to offices, they can also deliver food prepared by Dabbawalas kitchen. When collaborating with Zomato and Swiggy, there can be a further bifurcation of the option ‘Dabbas from Dabbawalas’ namely ‘My kitchen’ (home-cooked food delivery from user’s home to user’s location) and ‘Dabbawalas kitchen’ (delivery from Dabbawalas kitchen to user’s location). Additionally, they can collaborate with different corporates to set up complementary lunches and distribute Dabbawalas food vouchers/food cards, which are provided to employees by corporates. Further, they can open cloud kitchens/small outlets of ‘Dabbawalas Kitchen’ close to corporate areas, railway and metro stations, airports, corporate canteens, etc.

Even though the Mumbai Dabbawalas face different challenges, but with judicious adjustments to their four pillars, they may continue to achieve amazing results. The Dabbawalas show that an organization doesn’t need extraordinary talent to achieve outstanding performance with the right system.

Mumbai Dabbawala in the word itself there is the whole history, respect and emotion. They have been the very important part of Mumbai working life and economy that to since 1890.  The employment which has been created through them is immense the people who have been working in the organization is not very strong educational background and it has helped the population of whole Maharashtra to earn income through the Mumbai Dabbawala .  They have helped many people to earn income from lower background people. Employees in organization is not only from the Mumbai but they are from then all around the Maharashtra states like Pune, Satara, Jalna, etc.

As been Maharashtrian I feel very proud that such organization is from our state Maharashtra. Maharashtra is a form we all people proudly say the Origin of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj I was so touched with the speaker who has mention them as Malvas of Maharaj it was just so goosebumps moment for me it felt like people in our state are very deeply rooted to our ethics and traditional that is also what I was fascinated about. In the era of Chatrapati Maharaj there were people which dedicated their life gain swaraj for Maharashtra for future generation without even having expectation of having something in return to their service and Mumbai Dabbawala are also doing the same work with the malvas followed the principle just do work without expectation of something more. This selfless attitude of the Dabbawalas in our city feels so delighted and lucky to have people like them in today’s world. Nowadays even if you are asking help to your friend in the back of the mind, I am sure that you will afraid that, “If I have asked for help today from him will he ask for something more tomorrow” this kind of mindset we live in today’s world but the Mumbai Dabbawala will never think in such a way that’s what I learned from them. The management which has been very strong since 1890. Nowadays we are learning about the Management studies how to manage teams, organization and many more but can you imagine like in 1890 there was no management school in that era how Shri. Mahadeo Havaji Bachche has done that in that time what was he thinking about while starting the Dabbawala system. The coding system which is very effective how did he manage that, is that what he had knew from before or is that what he come up with, if he has come up with this coding system then he would have immense knowledge about this.

This coding system has helped the Mumbai Dabbawala organisation to deliver Dabba’s at right time and at right place at right time not after what even after so many years.  The main highlight about the working of the system is that without the help of any technology they are able to do it with very high accuracy and gaining them the status of SIX SIGMA ORANIZATION without the help pf any technology help. I am very sure that there would be very less companies which would have gained six sigma without the help of technology. Technology is the reason what we are today in today’s world, all the things which are utilizing todays are on the base of technology, all of we can’t even think about the world without technology it would very dangerous to even think about but they have achieved that. The start of Mumbai Dabbawala was at 1890 and the John Pierpont Morgan was also in same era, in 1890 Father of J.P Morgan have died and inherited the capital and become what we all know for sure, the great investment banker of the history. If we match all the above factors, we can see that there were many many great things happened in that era what was the modest of the people at that time, I just so eager to even think about it, it seems so interesting about this, isn’t that a coincidence or just 2 things happening at same time.

The message which they coney through the organization “Homecooked food is best food “is the main message from them. They are not talking about their services which they provide they are talking about the message which is beneficial for the people of our city, for our health. The company’s will be having slogan which would be having an interest for their services which they provide which will be beneficial for them but not the, Mumbai Dabbawala’s are willing to do that. “Customer are like God “this is very meaningful statement which they follow. They will not discriminate any customer they will always treat every customer with same respect. They will always prioritize the customer first and then the other things even there is rush in locals and many other factors they will be delivering the tiffin to their respective customer no matter what affects them. As the GDP of our country in low the price for their service is also very reasonable that every working associate can afford it. There are many reasons why we should admire the Mumbai Dabbawala and learn from them.  But the harsh truth is that even if we will see it the Mumbai dabbawalla are getting the benefits which we all are able to achieve it. The basic needs like getting proper education for their children, loans, Health benefits are not been able to benefit the Mumbai dabbawalla it feels very unfair. They are doing their task to serve the food and in return as a society they are not getting what they should have. Mumbai Dabbawala should able to have benefits and we all should help them to gain the attention and help them with their issues. Even thou they are famous they have attention but it is not that much beneficial if it is not helping the Dabbbawals community to grom in future. Sustaining the organization is very important in world they are able to attend to it but they also have a grow as community. Growing is very important for the whole economy if one sector/ field will grom the economy will be growing in all sectors, it will have affect on the whole economy and not to them respectively, if one person grows all of them around him will grow. Thus, having growth Is not beneficial for individual but for the whole economy.

As in Mumbai there is huge number of populations of working professional who are not residents of Mumbai and even students have also increased in the city who find it difficult to have delicious food for them to eat daily. I think Mumbai Dabbawala can expand in that sector and have huge potential for growing. As I was looking on internet that they are trying to expand in Cloud Kitchens or Centralised Kitchen from where they will supply the Tiffin’s to consumer but rather than doing that, I have one idea. You have a huge network of houses from where you pick up tiffin’s like around 1 lakh homes you take tiffin and delivery it, so rather than setting up yourself from start you have leads and contacts of the Housemakers who makes tiffin for someone she cares, so we should tell them to make more tiffin for other people and she can earn too. Its like a win – win situation for both, Housemaker is also earning the Mumbai Dabbawala could also deliver House Cooked Food to the citizen as they have the demand and the have the logistics already, they don’t have to do that. Being an Indian I am sure that in everyone house we always make sure that we will make some extra food no matter what so rather than wasting that extra food we would just collect the Extra tiffin from the home a get that tiffin deliver. The benefit is that we would not have to invest that much and have a huge growth potential in increase of dabbas in daily life as this could be very economical and efficient execution for them.

Each tiffin given by the housemaker should be noted and she should get paid according to the number of Tiffin she will provide. There are many Housemakers who are not able to work due to many reasons and thus they want to earn money but it is not possible for them, so from this we will not even increases the employment for the women in the society but we can help the women’s which dream of earning and was able to achieve this. As they provide the food but the emotion which are been carried by the tiffin of the Mumbai Dabbawala are not at all comparable. Swiggy and Zomato are not at all what Mumbai Dabbawala does. Mumbai Dabbawala is the innovation core so they should also the first to execute such thing in Mumbai as they were the first to start the Dabbawala service in whole India. In today’s situation we have a term called work-from-home so we can also be able to provide such services to them as this idea is not only depend on the people who are working in the offices but we can also provide them services to in their house and there are many numbers of such citizens who are in need of the good food. Students are also target in the market there is various college in Mumbai who would be great consumer students are the also target audience of this service. In this we would not need to do any extra investment towards land, raw material, people and I am sure this will be something which will be revolutionary in it as no one has put attention in such kind of thing.
